Japan has introduced additional restrictions on exports to Russia of technologies and goods that can be used by its defence industrial complex. The move is coupled with new sanctions Tokyo has placed on several military enterprises operated by Moscow.
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) said that from 18 March sales to Russia of more than 250 high-technology products – including semiconductors, sonars, lasers, communication equipment, electromagnetic equipment, and carbon fiber materials – will not be permissible.
It said the move is aligned with newly amended Japanese export legislation.
In addition, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on the same day that it has sanctioned nine Russian defence groups for their alleged role in supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The ministry said the sanctions involve asset freezing and bans on transactions.
The groups include Russian defence export agency Rosoboronexport, land systems manufacturers Kurganmashzavod and UralVagonZavod, Russian Helicopters, United Aircraft Corporation, United Shipbuilding Corporation, and the Zelenodolsk Shipyard.
