Brazil’s Ares Aeroespacial e Defesa (an Elbit Systems subsidiary) has joined with local company Equitron Automação Eletrônico Mecanica to integrate its TORC30 modular protected remote-controlled weapon station to Equitron’s EE-9 Cascavel NG 6×6 armored reconnaissance vehicle platform. The new solution was unveiled at the LAAD Defence & Security 2019 exhibition held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2 to 5 April.
Negotiations are under way with the Army Technological Center (CTEx) to conduct mobility and firing tests of the vehicle at the Army Evaluations Center.
Equitron unveiled in September 2016 an improved Brazilian Army Cascavel series vehicle, which was developed under 2015 contracts awarded by War Arsenal of São Paulo (AGSP). It includes a new steering system, air conditioning unit, run-flat tires, improved braking system, independent suspension, auxiliary power unit (APU), new powerpack, the latest generation communications and more. The original 90 mm turret system received new drive controls, an anti-tank missile launcher, a multi-spectral electro-optical (EO) surveillance system, and other upgrades. The vehicle platform was equipped with provision for a driver’s vision enhancer.
The TORC30 is designed to engage ground and air moving targets and was developed with the CTEx between July 2012 and December 2016, via financing by the Funding Authority for Studies and Projects (Finep) through the Research, Development, and Innovation Support Foundation of the Brazilian Army.
