Elbit's next-generation E-Lynx SR. (Elbit Systems)

Elbit Systems launched its next-generation E-LynX Soldier Radio (SR) at the International Dismounted Soldier Conference in London on 31 October.

The new SR is the latest addition to Elbit's E-LynX family of mobile tactical software-defined radios, with the main developments being its ability to use two channels simultaneously and a wider frequency spectrum.

An Elbit source told Janes that the addition of a second channel can be used to “enhance communication performance utilising advanced algorithms on multiple channels” or connect the radio to two networks simultaneously, one of which could be used for unmanned systems.

The new radio can operate on L-band and S-band frequencies in addition to the utra-high frequency (UHF) ones used by earlier E-LynX radios. The source said this improves the resilience of the system against jamming in combination with its spectrum-sensing and frequency hopping capabilities. It also allows larger bandwidths for video or other high-data-rate sensors, as well as multidomain operations and improved spectrum exploitation.

Other new features include the option to add mission modules for satellite communications or 5G cellular communications and significant improvements to the user interface, with the number of buttons reduced from seven to four and a wearable accessory that enables the operator to transmit and control the volume, according to the source.

The E-Lynx PNR-1000 SR has already proved a popular product, having been acquired by several armies, including those of Belgium, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, according to Janes C4ISR and Mission Systems .
