Indonesia has installed a Thales Ground Master 403 (GM403) air surveillance radar in the province of East Kalimantan, located in the eastern part of the Borneo island.
The Indonesian Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced on 8 July that the GM403 radar has been installed to primarily protect the airspace over the city of Nusantara, which is being built to be the future capital of Indonesia.
This GM403 radar has been jointly produced by Thales and Bandung-based state-owned defence electronics firm PT Len Industri, the MoD said.
Thales and PT Len have partnered to deliver 13 GM403 radars to the Indonesian MoD. Of these, âfour to five unitsâ will be installed in East Kalimantan by the end of 2024 to protect Nusantara, the MoD added.
The MoD said the recently installed GM403 radar has a range of 450 km.
Thales announced in June 2022 that it has secured a contract to provide the GM403 radars and SkyView command-and-control (C2)system to Indonesia. Under the contract, Thales will build the radars and C2 system while its partner, PT Len, will construct the radar stations, provide installation and integration of the systems, and manage civil works for the programme with support from Thales.
According to Janes C4ISR & Mission Systems: Land, the GM403 is the first member of Thales' SR3D family of âsoftware radar'. The SR3D platform consists of a common open radar architecture that uses software building blocks, coupled with multiple common radar subassemblies. These include signal generators, processors, transmitters, waveguides, flat faces, and digital receivers.
