The US Navy (USN) awarded a contract for the next landing platform dock (LPD) amphibious ships while onboard testing on the enhanced radar suite is scheduled for the second quarter of 2023.
The USN awarded HII's Ingalls Shipbuilding division a USD1.3 billion modification on 31 March to an earlier awarded contract for the procurement of the detail design and construction of amphibious transport dock LPD 32, the third Flight II LPD. The resulting fixed-price-incentive contract totals USD1.54 billion.
With SPY-6(V)2 Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR) equipment being installed on Richard M McCool Jr (LPD 29) in January, Raytheon plans to conduct standalone testing, bring the system up and do power checkouts, according to Mike Mills, Raytheon senior director of naval radars.
“We'll hand that over as well in May timeframe,” Mills told Janes during a 27 March interview in advance of the Navy League Sea-Air-Space 2023 Global Maritime Exposition, which is being held at National Harbor, Maryland, from 3 April.
“We're starting interfacing between the common combat management system and the [radar], and they'll start sea trials this summer.”
Raytheon installed a test radar at Wallops Island, Virginia, in April 2019 at a navy testing site, Mills said. “That has been doing all that risk mitigation prior to getting over to the ship,” he said. “Performance checkouts and all the things the navy wanted to do make sure were verified have already been done.
