Thales has signed an agreement with Bandung-based state-owned defence electronics firm PT Len Industri to launch a joint venture (JV) that will support the capability requirements of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI).

Under the JV, Thales and PT Len will establish a centre of excellence that will initially develop and build systems to fulfil the air surveillance requirements of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU), Thales announced in a media release on 3 June.

In particular, Thales and PT Len will collaborate to provide air-surveillance radars and command-and-control (C2) systems to the TNI-AU, Thales added.

As part of the JV, the two companies will also co-develop an Air Operations Centre for the TNI-AU. “Associated services, including maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activities, will be carried out at PT Len's site in Subang [in West Java],” Thales said.

In the future, the JV is also expected to work on command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR); military satellites; electronic warfare (EW); data links; and combat management systems (CMSs) for the TNI, Thales added.

The air-surveillance radars and C2 systems that the JV will provide to the TNI-AU are very likely to be Thales' Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) long-range radar and the associated SkyView C2 system. It is unclear if Thales and PT Len are collaborating to provide other radar and C2 systems to the TNI-AU under the JV. Thales had not responded to Janes request for more information at the time of publication.
