Ukraine conflict: Netherlands to donate C-UASs to Ukraine

Robin Radar Systems will send its radar-based C-UASs to Ukraine following a contract signed between the CEO, Siete Hamminga (right), and Commander of the Materiel and IT Command (COMMIT) Vice Admiral Jan Willem Hartman. (Netherlands Ministry of Defence)

The Netherlands is donating 51 new radar-based counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UASs) to Ukraine in a bid to bolster its armed forces.

Dutch company Robin Radar Systems is fulfilling the order, with deliveries scheduled to take place in stages throughout the last quarter of 2024, according to a Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MoD) announcement on 21 August.

One of the key benefits of the radar is its ability to monitor and detect UASs while on-the-move (OTM), including at high speeds. By operating OTM, the radar is also less vulnerable to attack, the announcement noted.

The systems are “essential to counter drone attacks from Russia”, the announcement added.

The picture accompanying the press release closely resembles Robin Radar Systems' Iris, a cylindrical-shaped 3D radar providing 360º UAS detection. Weighing 29 kg, the X-band (8–12 GHz) system features micro-Doppler technology and can detect UASs at ranges of up to 5 km.

An on-the-move feature can be added to Iris, enabling it to detect, track, and classify UASs at speeds of up to 100 km/h, the company claims.

The MoD has previously purchased radars from the manufacturer including static-based systems, which are currently deployed in “various locations”, the announcement concluded.
