Portuguese company EID has secured a contract to provide the entire C4I (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence) solution for the Portuguese Navy's new Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV).

The contract, announced on 23 July by the company, includes delivering all the communication systems for the vessel, comprising its Integrated Communication System (ICS) and the underwater telephone (UWT) from German company ELAC – a Cohort subsidiary of which EID is a part.

ICS is designed to improve the efficiency and safety of communication operations onboard naval vessels. The system can be adapted to a variety of operational scenarios as and when needed, the company detailed.

As part of ICS, the company can offer services including external and internal communication subsystems, such as HF (high-frequency), VHF (very-high-frequency), UHF (ultra-high-frequency) radio as well as satellite, datalinks, and other subsystems; onboard integration and systems engineering; and integrated logistics support.

In November 2023 Damen secured a contract to build the Portuguese Navy an MPV designated Multifunctional Naval Platform (MNP) by the navy. The 107 m vessel is designed for a variety of mission roles including ocean research, search and rescue, emergency relief, and maritime safety and naval support operations. It will feature a stern ramp for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) as well as a 94Γ—11 m flight deck and hangars for unmanned platforms – fixed-wing and rotary-wing – and helicopters.
