Latvia and Slovenia have acquired the TRML-4D radar, which will be deployed alongside their IRIS-T SLM air-defence systems in support of the ESSI. (Hensoldt)
Latvia and Slovenia have signed a EUR100 million (USD108 million) contract to procure Hensoldt's TRML-4D radar in support of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI).
The radars will be deployed alongside the two countries' IRIS-T SLM (Surface Launched Medium Range) air-defence system from Diehl Defence, Hensoldt announced on 4 July.
According to Hensoldt, the radar prevailed against strong competition during live tests in Latvia.
In December 2023 Latvia signed a contract with Diehl Defence for its IRIS-T SLM air-defence system, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026. In January 2024 Slovenia became the fourth country to procure the system, following Latvia, Germany, and Estonia.
The TRML-4D is a software-defined C-band (4–8 GHz) active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that utilises a gallium nitride (GaN) solid-state transmitter. The system can detect close to 1,500 targets in a 250 km radius to a height of 30 km and is capable of detecting platforms with a radar cross-section of 0.01 m². Fighter aircraft can be tracked as confirmed targets at ranges of more than 120 km, and supersonic missiles at ranges of more than 60 km.
Hensoldt is in the process of upgrading the TRML-4D with a new weapon locating capability, implemented via a software update, Sebastian Lohe, Hensoldt's director of sales for naval and ground radars, told Janes at Eurosatory 2024.
