UK Space Command held its debut space wargaming exercise – ‘Space Warrior' – in July at Southwick Park, Hampshire.

Held between 24 and 26 July the exercise focused on identifying future space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capability requirements for the command, a UK Space Command spokesperson informed Janes on 2 August.

This involved exploring what “space-based ISR capabilities need to be developed and retained as a sovereign, defence-owned capability, [as well as] where UK Space Command can collaborate with allies and partners, and what services can be accessed through UK and international commercial providers”.

When asked what technologies were employed, the spokesperson said that it involved a tabletop exercise aimed at drawing out knowledge and expertise. UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) staff and personnel, international partners, and industry suppliers were involved, they added.

A separate Royal Air Force (RAF) announcement noted that ‘Space Warrior' explored how commercial space-based ISR and defence's own ISR capabilities such as the ISTARI multisatellite system can co-operate.

Tyche, a 150 kg electro-optical concept demonstrator satellite being built by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), is also on track to launch this summer, the announcement added.
