The US Department of State has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of communication, sensor, and logistics equipment associated with the Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopters to India.

The FMS worth USD1.17 billion includes the sale of 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS JTRSs) for the Indian Navy's MH-60R helicopters, the State Department announced on 2 December.

Other equipment that will be delivered to India under this possible FMS include Raytheon's AN/AAS 44C multispectral forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems; advanced data transfer systems; identification friend-or-foe (IFF) systems; operator machine interface assistant; software development, and support including the Northrop Grumman Joint Mission Planning System (JMPS); undisclosed communication equipment and munitions; and support, repair, and test equipment, the State Department said.

This possible FMS is expected to improve the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, and strengthen collaboration with the US armed forces to deter current and future threats, the State Department added.

The Indian Navy declined Janes request to provide more information on this possible procurement.

The procurement of MIDS JTRS will enable the Indian Navy to access the Link 16 tactical datalink network used by the US and its allies including the NATO members. Janes analysis shows that this is very likely the first time that the Indian Navy will operate the MIDS JTRS. The Indian Navy's ability to access Link 16 will enhance its interoperability with the armed forces of the US and its allies.
