The US government has contracted Lockheed Martin to build UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters for Greece and Sweden.
Announced on 28 October, the USD1.2 billion award covers an undisclosed number of helicopters for the two European countries, as well as for other non-EMEA Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customers. Work will run through to 31 December 2027.
The US Department of Defense (DoD) award comes months after Greece signed a letter of offer and acceptance (LOA) for 35 of the medium-lift helicopters in April, while the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk: FMV) announced in July that it was acquiring 12 for the Swedish Air Force (SwAF).
The Hellenic Army is acquiring the 35UH-60Ms to replace the 20 remaining Bell UH-1Hs, one Agusta-Bell 212, and 10 Agusta-Bell AB205 versions of the ‘Huey' helicopter that have been in service since 1969, 1972, and 1974 respectively. They will augment 15 NHIndustries NH90 Troop Transport Helicopters (with a further five to be delivered) and 24 Boeing CH-47D Chinook helicopters in service.
