IDEX 2019: Paramount Group rolls out Mbombe 4

South Africa’s Paramount Group has launched the latest version of its Mbombe 4 mine- resistant armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) at IDEX 2019.

Mbombe 4 was developed for the export market using internal research and development funding to meet the requirements of potential export customers.

According to the company, “The vehicle is undergoing continuous trials and is taking part in two customer trials this summer [mid-2019]. In addition, the vehicle is being fully industrialised to allow for manufacture in the customers’ countries.”

Paramount Group said the Mbombe 4, in a 4x4 configuration, has a curb weight of 13,300 kg; a combat weight of 16,000 kg; and a payload of 2,700 kg that includes occupants, fuel, weapons, ammunition, and other equipment.

Mbombe 4 has an all-welded steel monocoque hull giving the occupants ballistic protection from small-arms fire up to STANAG 4569 Level 3. The hull’s lower part is V-shaped to provide a higher level of protection against mines to STANAG 4569 Level 4a and 4b. Paramount Group said the vehicle provides protection against a side blast such as an improvised explosive device (IED) or roadside bomb to the equivalent of 50 kg of TNT. Mbombe 4 can be fitted with appliqué armour packages to provide a higher level of ballistic protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 4, as well as higher levels of mine protection if required.
