UK company Silent Sentinel launched a new range of uncooled thermal imaging cameras at the IDEX 2019 exhibition, being held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on 17 February.
James Longcroft, Silent Sentinel business development director, told Jane’s that the new long-range (LR) family of cameras is designed to operate as a bridge between cooled and uncooled products, adding that the new systems are meant to “provide a range of uncooled cameras that have longer-range capabilities and higher sensitivity and that’s where we make the statement that we are trying to bridge the gap”.
The company also said the new LR family offers improved performance without life-cycle costs associated with cooled imagers.

The LR employs improved uncooled thermal cores that offer high thermal sensitivity (more than 30 mK) and reduced pixel pitch (12 μm), and is coupled to zoom lenses ranging from 15–75 mm to 40–300 mm. All members of the LR family offer auto-focus and auto-tracking as standard and they make use of advanced image contrast enhancements. Silent Sentinel said this translates into crisper and higher resolution imagery which, in turn, enables target detection and identification at longer ranges.
The LR is available within the Oculus, Osiris, and Jaegar housings and can address different requirements, from private security and public space surveillance, to more demanding border and homeland security applications.
The LR is taking aim at the many end users that have shown resistance to the life-cycle cost of cooled thermal cameras, including downtime caused by the processes of having to return the cameras for servicing. In comparison, uncooled thermal cameras require minimal maintenance and come at a significantly reduced buying cost.
