South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean is showcasing two diesel-electric submarine (SSK) concepts that have been tailored specifically for the Philippine Navy's requirements.

These concepts are being showcased at the Asian Defense and Security Exhibition (ADAS) 2024, which is being held from 25 to 27 September in Manila.

The first of these concepts is the KSS-III PN submarine, which is derived from the Republic of Korea Navy's KSS-III Batch II submarine class.

It displaces about 2,800 tonnes and is equipped with lithium-ion batteries that promise greater endurance when compared with boats fitted with lead-acid cells.

A second concept that is being presented is the Ocean1400 PN, which Hanwha Ocean describes as an upgraded variant of the Nagapasa class that was supplied by the company to the Indonesian Navy.

Both concepts can be further customised with specific combat systems to meet the Philippine Navy's requirements.

In response to questions from Janes, a representative from Hanwha Ocean confirmed that both concepts have been formally presented to the Philippine Navy for their consideration in the acquisition programme.

“Hanwha Ocean is uniquely positioned to provide a comprehensive solution for the establishment of the Philippine Navy's inaugural submarine force, encompassing not only the supply of next-generation submarines but also the provision of crew training, essential base facilities, and equipment and logistics support,” reads a statement that was provided by the company prior to the questions from Janes .
