Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has signed a contract with thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) for the supply of four additional next-generation Type 212CD (Common Design) conventionally powered diesel-electric submarines (SSKs) for the German Navy.

The contract, announced by BAAINBw and tkMS on 19 December 2024, brings the total order for the German Navy to six submarines under the joint German-Norwegian Type 212CD programme. The German Parliament's Budget Committee gave the approval to exercise options for the four additional vessels during its final committee session of 2024, held on 18 December.

The agreement originally concluded with tkMS in July 2021 and valued at approximately EUR5.5 billion (USD6.1 billion) included the manufacture and delivery of an initial six identical submarines – two for Germany and four for Norway.

With the contractual extension to include an additional four boats for the German Navy and Norway's current intention to exercise options for up to two more boats for the Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN) as stated in its latest long-term defence plan, both NATO partners could have six submarines of the new type at their disposal in the future, BAAINBw said.

The two countries are looking to increase the number of submarines on order to better counter the Russian maritime threat.
