The Palestinian Authority's security plan for a post-war Gaza Strip

PA's security plan

Janes understands from reports by senior Palestinian Authority (PA) security sources that the PA security services have prepared a security plan to deploy its forces to secure the Gaza Strip after the Israel-Gaza conflict, in the context of wider international planning efforts. On 11 June Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced in his speech at the Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza conference in Jordan that the PA was ready to assume responsibility for all Gaza Strip crossings. However, plans have also been prepared in co-ordination with the US for a larger deployment to the Gaza Strip.

To this end, PA political leadership have requested in recent weeks that its security services branches prepare plans for deploying security forces into the Gaza Strip to provide general security, protect humanitarian aid convoys and reconstruction materials entering the Gaza Strip, and protect the border crossings with Egypt and Israel. Major General Majid Faraj, head of the General Intelligence Service (GIS), is responsible for overall supervision and implementation of these plans, earning him the colloquial title in the West Bank of ‘the security contractor'.

The PA's proposed plan called ‘Saving Gaza' includes the reactivation of 17,000 PA security forces that have remained in Gaza since the 2007 coup, when there were approximately 55,000 active security personnel.
