Azerbaijan's Smart Point has developed what the company describes as a “heavy lift” rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), debuting the system at ADEX 2022 in Baku.

Speaking to Janes , company director Telman Huseynov said that the battery-powered Simurq UAV can be configured for logistics or combat roles. It has a 30 kg cargo capacity and in its combat configuration can be equipped with two 10 kg bombs and a 7.62 mm machine gun. Huseynov explained that the machine gun is stabilized, and that the aircraft features a ballistic computer to aid it in engaging targets with its bombs.

Huseynov said that work on Simurq commenced around three years ago, and it is in operational service with Azerbaijan's military.

The UAV uses flight control software that is common to Smart Point's range of UAVs, which Huseynov said features GPS waypoint navigation or manual control, and which is protected against spoofing and GPS and communications jamming. The aircraft is equipped with day/night and thermal cameras.

Simurq has an operating radius of 17 km and a ceiling of 1,000 m. It can achieve a top speed of 50 km/h.

According to company data the aircraft has an endurance of 30 minutes when carrying its payload.
