General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) announced on 2 December that it had hosted its first Blue Magic event in the Netherlands on 19 November. “Blue Magic started as a corporate venturing initiative of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems aimed at keeping the company aware of early technology and other developments in key markets, as we strove to maintain our innovative edge and bring valuable products and services to market,” C Mark Brinkley, a GA-ASI spokesperson, told Janes on 5 December. It initially focused on the US but has expanded into the international market, he said. The first international event took place in Belgium in 2019 and has since grown in size and technological scope, Brinkley added.
Blue Magic events enable GA-ASI “to engage with emerging businesses and hear about their ideas for solutions to challenging defence problems”, he continued. GA-ASI then invests in teams that it believes can contribute to the most important problems.
They also serve as a “knowledge conduit, bringing businesses together at a single event to discuss possible collaborations, both with and without GA-ASI” as well as other prime contractors, investors, law firms, and customers, Brinkley said.
Around 200 people attended the Eindhoven event, which also saw participation from the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, Netherlands Ministry of Defence, Lockheed Martin Ventures, Brainport Development, Brabant Development Agency (BOM), Netherlands Industries for Defence & Security (NIDV), and SpaceNed, the GA-ASI statement said.
