Danish manufacturer MyDefence has told Janes that the ‘Spectrum Warrior' artificial intelligence (AI) upgrade for its Wingman counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) is already receiving feedback from users in Ukraine.

“We've always been focused on having a zero false alarm rate, so soldiers can have confidence in their UAS detectors,” Dan Hermansen, CEO of MyDefence, told Janes.

“What we're seeing [in] Ukraine is that there are so many drones up that the soldier nearly always has more than one potential threat at once, so needs to choose the one with the highest signal, which is usually also the closest one to you. Spectrum Warrior allows us to do that, and enhance that awareness with direction-finding. We're getting good feedback from Ukrainian and other selected users. What we're planning is that Spectrum Warrior allows the user to open up to using full software-defined radio (SDR) mode on their Wingman system, allowing them to monitor from tens of megahertz right up to about 6 GHz,” Hermansen said.

MyDefence has already delivered more than 2,000 Wingman portable UAS detectors to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) over the last five years. Hermansen confirmed they are combat proven and have performed as expected. It is to Wingman systems that Spectrum Warrior will be added first, with Hermansen explaining that with Wingman making up 70% of MyDefence's products that are in use, it will have the biggest impact there with soldiers on the ground. It will be added to MyDefence's larger vehicle and structure-based Watchdog and Wolfpack systems in the future, he added.
