Saab UK has been providing its laser-based Tactical Engagement Simulation System (TESS) to the UK for 30 years and marked the occasion on 5 November 2024 with a display of its current and developing TES capabilities.

The system was known as Direct Fire Weapon Effect Simulator (DFWES) until the latest contract, signed on 9 April 2024, where it was renamed Instrumented Live Training – Direct (ILT-D). Since entering service in 1994, it has seen a continual process of technological development, increased capability, contract renewals, and system expansion.

Speaking at the event, Joakim Alhbin, head of Saab's training and simulation business unit, said that the business model and the co-operative approach to training that had been developed over that period with the UK had formed the basis for Saab's relationships with other customers. “We have exported this way of operating around the world,” he said.

Among the equipment on display were the indoor and outdoor trainers for the Carl-Gustav Mark 4 (CG M4) that are being acquired by the army as part of its CG M4 purchase in March 2023. The outdoor training versions, produced by Saab's Czech subsidiary, are replicas that accurately simulate all aspects of the real weapons.
