The Republic of Korea Army (RoKA) is testing a robotic dog developed by Hyundai Rotem, Janes learnt at the Korea Army International Defense Industry Exhibition (KADEX) 2024 held at Gyeryongdae from 2 to 6 October.
A Hyundai Rotem official told Janes that the company delivered four units of the robotic dog to the RoKA in August for testing.
The RoKA will test the robot until the end of 2024, the official said, and added that it was developed to support surveillance and combat missions. It can be particularly useful for counter-terrorism operations.
The robot weighs 40 kg, and has a maximum speed of 4 km/h, a maximum payload capacity of 10 kg, and an endurance of about 90 minutes. It can climb stairs with a maximum height of 20 cm, the official said.
The official added that the robot can overcome forward slopes up to 24° steep and side slopes up to 11° steep.
The robot can be equipped with cameras on all sides to detect threats and enhance surveillance of troops. It can currently detect humans at a distance of 500 m during the day and 100 m during night, the official said.
Weapons including 9 mm and 5 mm pistols can also be integrated onto the robotic dog and operated remotely by a soldier to eliminate threats. The platform can be used to carry and launch stun grenades and tear gas, the official added.
In addition, the platform can be equipped with a robotic arm to open doors or carry objects including mines, the official said.
