The Luftwaffe is to join the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) in fielding the BAE Systems Striker II helmet-mounted display (HMD) aboard its Eurofighter combat aircraft.
The service announced on 14 November that the German Defence and Budget Committee had approved the acquisition of the helmet as part of a wider capability enhancement for the Eurofighter that also includes additional MBDA Meteor beyond visual-range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAMs).
“Gamechanger on the way!” the Luftwaffe said on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. The Luftwaffe did not say how many Striker II HMDs it intends to field or when it expects to receive them.
News of the Luftwaffe intent to field the Striker II HMD came 14 months after the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) contracted BAE Systems to further develop the helmet with the intent of the RAF flying it operationally from 2027 to 2028. To date, the other Eurofighter partner nations of Italy and Spain have not said if they intend to acquire the Striker II, and neither have export countries of Austria, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
First unveiled to Janes in 2014, the Striker II is billed by BAE Systems as an all-digital HMD solution that delivers “all of the performance all of the time without the need for transition [between day and night modes of operation]”.
