The United States has approved the sale of Lockheed Martin MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters to Spain.

The State Department approval, which was announced by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 15 March, covers eight MH-60R helicopters, plus associated equipment, weapons, and services for an estimated USD950 million.

ā€œThe proposed sale will improve Spain's capability to meet current and future threats. The MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter will provide the capability to perform anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare missions along with the ability to perform secondary missions, including vertical replenishment, search-and-rescue, and communications relay and will bolster the Spanish Navy's ability to support NATO and remain interoperable with the US and the NATO alliance,ā€ the DSCA said.

The Spanish Navy (Armada EspaƱola) fields the Sikorsky SH-60B (Sā€70Bā€1) Seahawk helicopter as its primary rotary-winged anti-submarine warfare and antiā€surface warfare type. Twelve such helicopters are flown from navy frigates in these roles. It also fields SH-60F, Bell AB212, MD 500, and Sikorsky SH-3D helicopter types.

The State Department approval does not constitute a sale, or even that a type selection has been made. Any deal must first be signed off by the US Congress before a contract can be issued. Should the deal go ahead, Spain would join Australia, Denmark, Greece, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the United States, as operators of the MH-60R, with more than 300 helicopters in service between them.
