Poland will receive the LTAMDS from Raytheon by 2028 as part of a fixed-price-incentive USD2.09 million FMS contract. (Raytheon)
The US Department of Defense (DoD) approved the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) of Raytheon's Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) to Poland on 31 July.
A fixed-price-incentive USD2.09 million contract was awarded to Raytheon as part of the FMS for the low-rate initial production of LTAMDS, with production slated for completion by November 2028.
Work will be undertaken in Andover, Massachusetts.
The DoD declined to provide Janes with additional information about the contract.
In September 2023 Poland's then Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak approved a letter of acceptance to procure 12 LTAMDSs along with 48 Patriot launchers and a stock of PAC-3 missiles.
LTAMDS is a new gallium nitride-based active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar intended to replace the US Army's Patriot ground-based air-defence radar. It is a key component of the army's Integrated Air and Missile Defense architecture.
Equipped with three antenna arrays, LTAMDS offers comprehensive 360º surveillance to detect advanced threats, including hypersonic weapons. The primary array, while similar in size to the current Patriot sensor, delivers more than double the power, the company asserts.
Although LTAMDS is initially intended for the US Army, Raytheon is offering it as a future solution for existing customer Patriot systems.
