Brazilian defence exports reached their highest level in 11 years in the first 10 months of 2024, the Brazilian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 1 November.
Export sales amounted to BRL9.53 billion (USD1.57 billion) from 1 January through 31 October 2024, surpassing a previous high of USD1.62 billion through all of 2021, the MoD said. A total of USD1.45 billion in exports was recorded in 2023.
Top export items in 2024 included fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, light weapons, ammunition, non-lethal armament, and engineering services, the MoD's Secretariat of Defense Products (SEPROD) said.
Brazil sells to around 100 countries, with 40% of exports being aircraft, the SEPROD added.
Major sales in 2024 included Embraer C-390 Millennium transport aircraft to Austria, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands, and A-29 Super Tucano training and light attack aircraft to Paraguay and Uruguay.
The state-owned company EMGEPRON (Empresa Gerencial de Projetos Navais) also exported 105 mm high-explosive ammunition, a source told Janes.
Other companies that secured export contracts in 2024 include Mac Jee Defesa, Condor Tecnologias Não-Letais, Taurus Armas, Ares Aeroespacial e Defesa, AEL Sistemas, and Gespi Defense Systems, sources said.
A total of 252 companies are registered with the SEPROD, offering around 1,700 products including armoured vehicles, trucks, ships, unmanned systems, radar systems, communications, protective gear, shelters, field support equipment, military clothing, optics, small arms, soldier gear, and maintenance services.
Defence industry represents 3.58% of Brazil's gross domestic product (GDP) and generates 2.9 million direct and indirect jobs in the country, the MoD said.
