Nammo has signed a ‘joint statement of a strategic partnership agreement' with a Ukrainian defence company on the licence production of artillery shells in Ukraine, the Norwegian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on X (formerly Twitter) on 20 March.
Norwegian Minister of Defence Tore Sandvik said on his ministry's website on 20 March that Nammo would enter the strategic partnership agreement with a major Ukrainian defence company to expand the scope of their current co-operation to include ammunition, components, and materials.
The Norwegian MoD tweeted, “The partnership builds on successful co-operation on transferring 155 mm artillery technology to Ukraine, supported bilaterally by the governments of Norway and Ukraine. This will help meet the need of Ukraine for sovereign and national ammunition production.” The partnership will also explore co-operation on demining and disposal.
Nammo agreed with Ukraine in August 2024 on the licence production of 155 mm artillery shells in the war-torn country, supported by funding from Norway.
The Norwegian MoD said on its website on 20 March that the Ukrainian defence company is producing at full capacity and will expand production. It is the first ammunition from Ukraine ever to be registered with a NATO Stock Number (NSN), according to the ministry.
Asked by Janes whether he could name the Ukrainian company and give its current and future 155 mm shell production capacity, a Nammo spokesperson declined to comment for security reasons beyond saying, “We are ramping up substantially.”
Sandvik emphasised Norway's long-term support for Ukraine, adding that increasing Ukrainian production capacity would contribute to increasing overall ammunition production in Europe.
