The Brazilian Army is deciding which industry team will upgrade 98 EE-9 Cascavel 6×6 wheeled armoured reconnaissance vehicles by 2031 after four consortia submitted their bids.
In November 2021 the Manufacturing Directorate of the Department of Science and Technology issued a solicitation for the development of two vehicle prototypes and the production of a pilot batch of seven modernised vehicles for evaluation. Interested companies had until 21 February to submit their technical and price proposals for the project worth up to BRL86.6 million (USD17 million).
The Director of the Manufacturing Directorate General Tales Eduardo Areco Villela told Janes that the four consortia that respond included: one formed by Akaer Engenharia, Universal Importação, Exportação e Comércio with Opto Space & Defense; another with Ares Aeroespacial e Defesa together with AEL Sistemas; an Equitron Automação Eletrônico Mecanica with Safran Electronics & Defense Brazil team; and China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) partnering with Columbus Comercial Importadora e Exportadora, XCMG Brasil Indústria and Sigma Delta Tecnologia.
The army anticipates selecting the winner in late March, and a contract could be inked within 30 days of this announcement, according to Gen Tales Villela.
