Poland's Armaments Agency (AA) within its Ministry of National Defence (MND) has ordered the first batch of 111 Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for the Polish army.
Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW), a Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) subsidiary, was awarded a PLN6.57 billion (USD1.69 billion) contract for the delivery of the tracked IFVs to replace obsolete BWP-1s (the Polish designation for the Soviet-made BMP-1).
The contract was signed by representatives of the AA, PGZ, and HSW in Warsaw on 27 March in the presence of the Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. According to the AA, the contract covers the delivery of the vehicles, a training and logistics package, and the delivery of technical documentation for serial production and acceptance tests.
All 111 Borsuk IFVs are expected to be delivered by the end of 2029. AA spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Grzegorz Polak told Janes at the event that the first vehicles should be delivered by the end of 2025. This information was confirmed by an HSW representative; however, due to the contract, the exact number of IFVs which are currently being assembled could not be revealed. The HSW facility in Stalowa Wola has been expanded to increase its production capacity. Both hull and turret assembly lines are now capable of delivering Borsuk IFVs, Krab self-propelled howitzers, and Rak self-propelled mortars.
The order is the first contract under a framework agreement for 1,400 Borsuks, which was signed on 28 February 2023. Under the agreement, the MND is expected to order 1,000 IFVs plus 400 other tracked platforms such as command, reconnaissance, and medical evacuation (medevac) vehicles.
