Polish shipbuilder Baltic Operator held a steel-cutting ceremony for the second of two Modified Turva-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) on order for the Finnish Border Guard (FBG) at its shipyard in Gdańsk on 3 December.

When handed over to the FBG's maritime arm at the end of 2026, the OPV will complete the revamp of the country's coastguard fleet. The first of the pair was laid down in March 2024 and will be delivered in late 2025.

The two Modified Turva-class OPVs are an improved variant of the FBG's OPV Turva , which was commissioned into service in 2014 as the world's first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered coastguard ship. The follow-on ships will be slightly longer than Turva (98 m compared with 95.5 m) and with more capacity.

Features include a flight deck forward capable of operating and refuelling H215 and NH90 helicopters and a hangar for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under the bridge. They will be capable of responding to oil and chemical spills, with the capacity for 1,180 m 3 recovered oil, and can accommodate 600 rescuees internally.

In service, the three Turva/Modified Turva-class OPVs will replace six older vessels and will operate around 330 days per year.
