The US Department of State notified Congress on 15 August of a possible Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to Germany of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles for an estimated cost of up to USD5 billion, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced in a press release later the same day.
The agency said the German government had requested 600 Patriot PAC-3 MSE missiles, including 10 fly-to-buy missiles. The possible FMS would also include tools and test equipment, range, and test programmes; support equipment; associated publications and technical documentation; training equipment; spare and repair parts; new equipment training; transportation; quality assurance team support; US government and contractor technical assistance, engineering, and logistics support services; systems integration and checkout; field office support; participation in the International Engineering Services Program and Field Surveillance Program; launcher modification kits; MSE conversion kits; and other related logistics and programme support.
“The proposed sale will improve Germany's capability to meet current and future threats and increase the defensive capabilities of its military. It will support Germany's goal of improving national and territorial defence as well as interoperability with US and NATO forces,” according to the agency.
The prime contractor for the possible sale is Lockheed Martin.
US approval of the possible PAC-3 MSE sale follows a NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) contract award to Raytheon announced by the company on 6 August to supply additional Patriot Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical (GEM-T) missiles to Germany.
