Sunil is a Lead Analyst in our Land team, who’s been with us since November 2017, and this is his story.
When asked about his work at Janes, Sunil said he likes “deep focused work with an aim to be the best in class in a certain subject area. As an analyst in a niche subject – land warfare platforms – I am able to curate this aspiration of mine. The role not only involves deep focused work as an individual contributor, but also requires managing collaborative projects. I place a lot of emphasis on mutual respect, and I see that in discussions, debates, and opinions, whenever collaborative work is required. I like the fact that critical feedback and counter opinions are respected, and mutual respect does not lead to patronisation or subservience that negatively impacts the quality of deliverables.”
“In my opinion, the bedrock of Janes culture is built around its diversity – with employees from various backgrounds (educational and socio-economic), regions, nationalities, and age groups. While Janes is a relatively small organisation, this mature focus to have an inclusive workplace culture demonstrates the importance diversity as a culture has to balance the demands of diverse perceptions and aspirations.”
“Engaging fearlessly is the basis of collaborative work. I do this every day, be it in my internal team meetings or with other teams in Janes, especially whenever there is a requirement to provide a customer an analysis or answer to a question. I engage fearlessly with mutual respect, however ensuring that the quality or accuracy of the deliverable is maintained to the highest standards of Janes.”
During his long tenure, Sunil has participated in many impactful projects. “I started my journey in Janes with a long-term project to restructure the content sets within the land domain to align to a uniform standard and to have a data-centric approach.” He also took part in more collaborative projects. For example, one that “involves building the guidelines for creating land equipment content sets... This is a dynamic project and involves updates based on the maturity of JAWS development.” In addition, “in 2019, I worked on a mammoth project for a customer who wanted to understand the EV-hybrid technology in AFVs. The document that was built involved over 100 hours of work and over 100,000 words.” Finally, Sunil has also “mentored and trained a team of data analysts who will transform the long-form content in land content sets to connected data”. Most of Sunil’s learning happens on the job in the form of collaborative work. He said that “the immense depth of knowledge at Janes and interactions with the industry also help” in addition to Rise, our internal L&D platform. “This role has made me more analytical in my thinking. It has improved my understanding of the subject area I am working in. The transition of Janes is enabling me to understand and learn new technologies that will drive the future of knowledge management and given me an understanding of how information will be consumed in a future infused with AI.”
He also added that “getting my first byline or having my name on the land platform yearbook in the first year of my work was a memorable experience”.
Finally, “Janes is a great place to work if military equipment and geopolitics from a defence industry and political perspective interest someone”.
