With all the hardware installed on aircraft carrier John F Kennedy (CVN 79) for its SPY-6(V)3 radar suite in 2022, Raytheon is preparing to start bringing the radar online in the fourth quarter of 2023, Mike Mills, Raytheon senior director of naval radars, told Janes .
“We'll move into where we hand that system over to the testing team [and] they'll start testing between combat management system and actual radar,” Mills told Janes during a 27 March interview in advance of the Navy League Sea-Air-Space 2023 Global Maritime Exposition, which is being held at National Harbor, Maryland, from 3 April.
Raytheon will be conducting equipment checkouts, powering up the system, and checking different parameters, he said.
Also known as the Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR), the SPY-6(V)3 will be a “modern long-range, three-dimensional (3D) radar used to search, detect, and provide space-stabilised, three-co-ordinate (range, bearing, height) data for air intercept control and designation to a weapon system and air traffic control (ATC) system”, according to recently released US Navy (USN) documents supporting the USN fiscal year (FY) 2024 budget proposal.
“The Enterprise Radar Suite (ERS), which includes EASR, is intended to replace the functions that Dual Band Radar (DBR) performed on CVN 78 (USS Gerald R Ford ), but at a much lower cost,” the USN said.
