Ukraine conflict: RMK Marine launches second Mazepa-class corvette for Ukraine

The second Mazepa (MILGEM)-class corvette under construction for the Ukrainian Navy, Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi , has officially been launched, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 2 August.

The launch ceremony, which was attended by Ukrainian Minister of Defence Rustem Umerov and the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, was held at RMK Marine's shipyard in Tuzla, Istanbul, on 1 August.

RMK Marine is building the two vessels under a framework agreement signed by the Ukrainian MoD and the Turkish Defence Industry Agency (SSB) in December 2020. Turkish engineering company STM has overall responsibility for the programme.

Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi started construction on 2 October 2022 and was laid down on 18 August 2023.

Meanwhile, work on first-of-class Hetman Ivan Mazepa (F 211) continues to make progress. The lead ship was launched alongside the steel-cutting ceremony of the second ship on 2 October 2022 and has been on sea trials since May 2024.

The Mazepa class is based on the Turkish Navy's four 99 m Ada (MILGEM)-class corvettes that entered service between 2011 and 2019.

The ships in service with the Turkish Navy have an overall length of 99 m, a top speed of 29 kt, a standard range of 3,500 n miles at 15 kt, and carry a crew of 93, with accommodation for an additional 13 personnel. The ships feature a flight deck and hangar that can accommodate a 10 tonne S70 Seahawk helicopter.
